La Mongie - Resort description & ski information
The French ski resort of La Mongie is part of the Tourmalet Ski Area with access to 103 individual pistes, served by 43 ski lifts. In addition to the skiing in La Mongie itself (120km of pisted ski runs), the resort in directly linked by Ski Lift to the ski areas of Barèges. The appropriate ski lift pass will allow you to ski or snowboard in the other Tourmalet ski resort of Barèges.
Skiing in La Mongie
La Mongie offers good sking, particularly, for Beginner skiers. The skiing areas are less crowded too. Outside the French school holiday it's rare to encounter queues for lifts or lunch. Intermediate and advanced skiers will have lots of space on the pistes (on some runs it's not unusual to find yourself skiing alone) while beginners will get more time with their instructors because there are fewer people in ski school. You can ski from all the way over the Col du Tourmalet to La Mongie. The resort also boasts Europe's longest continuous blue/green run - 14 kilometres from the Col du Tourmalet back to the village of Bareges.
For fans of fresh snow and exhilarating descents, Tourmalet’s signature run is the much heralded, guided off piste descent from the Pic du Midi. For decades this classic cable car was reserved for privileged scientists making their way to and from the exploratory perched at the top of the Pic. However the cable car is now open for skiers and snowboarders who can hire the services of a local ski guide and tackle a memorable off piste descent.
The resort Information
The purpose built ski station of La Mongie contrasts well with the village of Barèges in servicing the vast Tourmalet ski domain. The ski in, ski out resort stands at 1800m and the pistes rise majestically all around. This is the largest ski resort on the French side of the Pyrenees with over 100km of runs set between 1400 and 2500m. The domain provides an excellent combination of vast open bowls, tree lined runs and some exceptional off piste. It even hosted the downhill world skiing championships in 1986.
A trip to La Mongie can never be complete until the Pic du Midi has been experienced. Climb aboard the cable car in the heart of the resort and prepare to straddle the sky in a 15 minute ride to the observatory of the Pic du Midi. The stunning and unforgettable panorama seen from the 600m² of terraces at an altitude of 2,877 metres includes the Pyrenean chain, the great Southern plains and the foothills of the Massif Central.
