Alpe d'Huez resort description & ski information
What Alpe d’Huez lacks in alpine charm, it more than makes up for in varied skiing. One of the oldest and largest resorts in France, it offers more or less guaranteed snow all season-long, and some really sensational pistes. The ski resort is large enough for you to choose whether you want to party or take it easy, with a concentration of excellent, if rather anglicized, pubs and restaurants in the village centre, and a more laid back atmosphere on the outskirts.
There is enough choice in both skiing and after-ski activities here to make Alpe d’Huez popular with both families and the most energetic of party animals.
Skiing in Alpe d’Huez
With a grand total of 248km of runs, not to mention the off-piste opportunities, Alpe d’Huez is home to a vast number of green, blue and red runs, with a total of 17 black on top of that. Most of the easier ski routes, ideal for beginners onwards, are based in the bowls immediately around the resort centre. For the more adventurous skier and snowboarder, the Pic Blanc glacier which looms over the village at 3330m is home to some of the most challenging blacks around, including the 16km long Sarenne, and the Tunnel, which careers through an icy tunnel in a hair-raisingly steep descent.
The Resort & Ski Accommodation Information
Alpe d'Huez attracts sports enthusiasts year round and has always been a key feature of the Tour de France, so be it climbing, skating, cycling, ice driving, swimming or paragliding, there is plenty to choose from. The nightlife is full on too, with a reputation for party bars and clubs, and restaurants offer up everything from home cooked French cuisine to fast food.
Ski France has some excellent four-star catered chalets, Chalet Ariane 2 and Chalet Les Carines located in the exclusive altiport hamlet just out of the main village, but on the pistes, so you can enjoy the hustle and bustle of the vibrant town centre yet still get a peaceful night’s sleep. However if you want to be in the thick of it then the Hotel Royal Ours Blanc, one of the best 4 star hotels in Alpe d'Huez and located in the middle of the town will be the choice for you. In addition to this accommodation we also feature a whole array of great value self catering ski chalets in the Altiport hamlet of Alpe d'Huez.
