Nicknamed 'the island in the sun', the resort of Alpe d'Huez is located in a sunny bowl at an altitude of 1860m, making it a fantastic destination for a sun-soaked escape of fresh air and alpine scenery. Although some may say it is functional rather than overly pretty, the resort sits on the border of the Ecrins National Park where some breath-taking backdrops can be explored. For more adrenaline fuelled activities, there's paragliding, mountaineering and ice climbing. There's also the stunning Ecrins National Park nearby for those who like to explore the beautiful alpine landscapes by foot, by bike or even by horse back!

Fans of wildlife should make a beeline for the Ecrins National Park, where sky-high mountain peaks cascade down into mirror lakes and green meadows. The area is home to hundreds of bird species and if you’re lucky, you may spot a Chamois or Ibex, both similar to mountain goats.
