winter summer

Don't be fooled by La Tania's relatively low altitude, around 1,350m; this purpose-built resort has access to the magnificent 3 Valleys ski area in the Tarentaise Valley in the Savoie department in south-east France. The resort's noisy neighbours - Courchevel and Meribel - might get the celebrity visitors and much of the attention, but pretty La Tania is family-friendly, good value and has all the snow sports virtues that brought Olympic Winter games here in 1992.

Resort

La Tania was built to accommodate visitors to the Albertville Winter Olympics in 1992. Although it's modern, the village was developed sympathetically and has plenty of traditional Savoyard charm in its woodland setting. The original, purpose-built apartment complexes are complemented by a charming chalet quarter nestled in the forest. The resort is car-free with a friendly, intimate, village feel to its centre. There's a good choice of chalet and apartment accommodation, skiing schools, and fine local pistes, easily accessible from the village itself. If you're after a larger selection of bars and restaurants or just something a bit livelier, you can easily access the various villages of Courchevel using the excellent free shuttle bus.

La Tania

La Tania is part of the Courchevel Valley, which makes up one third of the huge 3 Valleys ski area. The resort is relatively low lying, but it can still boast very good quality skiing in the immediate vicinity of the resort. In fact, the wooded slopes are both beautiful and good quality, and a major snow making operation (500 ski cannons) keeps the pistes around the village itself in fine fettle. La Tania has a great selection of wooded runs immediately above the resort. Hop on the gondola out of the village to get started at Praz-Juget, with green and blue runs back towards La Tania.

Intermediates can stretch themselves on big woodland runs, with Folyères being a particular favourite. Further up the mountain, you'll find some excellent off-piste skiing from the Dou des Lanches lift, which also accesses a black run. Further long black runs can be found at Jean Blanc and Jockeys which take you down towards Le Praz. The beginners slopes are good for all ages, but can get busy. Stepping up from the nursery slopes can be a bit of a challenge locally – the next-level runs aren't quite gentle, empty or slow enough – and this may tempt newer, younger skiers to head over to the wide greens of Courchevel 1850, where of course they'll be spoiled for choice!

From La Tania you have direct and easy access to the rest of the Courchevel Valley, which offers a vertical descent of 1,400m to 2,700m and a fantastic selection of pistes to suit all abilities. The lifts are fast, modern and effortlessly connect the various sectors of the valley.

The 3 Valleys

The 3 Valleys (La Tania is in the Courchevel Valley) is one of the most famous ski areas in the world, and claims to be the largest and the best. It is certainly enormous, with 600km of pistes split into 321 runs over 105km² of top-class skiing served by 169 lifts.

This means an enormous choice of every sort of skiing you can imagine over a 2,000m+ altitude range. There are four glaciers and there has been huge investment to provide the facilities that skiers want. From off-piste wonderlands to cross country, gentle beginners' confidence builders to boarding parks, the 3 Valleys really does have it all.

The Courchevel Valley offers the biggest variety, with everything from wide greens, to rolling blues, to steep, long reds to some serious off-piste options. The Meribel Valley is often the busiest due to its location in the centre of the ski area but also offers a great selection of runs. The Belleville Valley, home to Val Thorens and Les Menuires has 300km of pistes over nearly 2,000 metres of vertical descent and offers the most snow-sure skiing in the area due to it's altitude.

Winter Activities

The 3 Valleys offers a huge variety of non-ski activities and indoor fun and games. As well as skiing, in La Tania you can toboggan, snow-shoe walk, husky sled, hire snow mobiles and arrange paragliding. Further afield in Courchevel (1850) – but still easily accessible – you'll find iice skating, bowling, and much more. The brand new Aquamotion Centre, between in Courchevel Village (1550) and Courchevel Moriond (1650) cost Eur63 million and is just a short lift and bus hop away. Here you'll find every sort of water-based fun known to man and plenty of pampering and wellness too.

Despite its relatively small number of restaurants, La Tania manages to cover all culinary bases!

Grab quick meals and takeaways, including pizzas, from Snack-Bar Le Snow Food. Head to Pub Le Ski Lodge for a mix of good-value burgers, British pub classics and french cuisine. La Taïga has been popular in past years, with good prices for a good standard of French food. Restaurant La Ferme de La Tania adds Savoyard specialities to the mix and has a lovely sunny terrace. Try the crepes and cripites – a super-thin pizza – at Restaurant Les Chanterelles. Restaurant Les Marmottons has a mussels and chips nights on Thursdays.

On the hill, you'll need to head towards the bright lights of Courchevel for the big name restaurants, but there's a real local hidden gem in the shape of Bouc Blanc, near the La Tania gondola. Beautifully authentic décor is matched with friendly service and good-value food. Le Roc Tania has some of the best views in the area and a similarly winning way with mountain classics.

You can also scale the haute cuisine heights at La Tania with a visit to Michelin-starred Le Farçon, which has been honoured since 2006 for its imaginative take on French regional cooking.

Nightlife

La Tania is built around family holidays, but there are still plenty of options for drinking and socialising in this friendly resort, which usually has a strong British presence.

Good-value happy hours and live music keep Le Chrome Bar busy, and you can grab a burger and watch live sport here. Pub Le Ski Lodge pulls in British visitors from across the ski area and entertains them with regular gigs, themed evenings and live sport. It's buzzing from early evening onwards and, if you want a late one, stays open to 2am.

Slow things down a little at the La Taïga Lounge and enjoy a sophisticated cocktail or two.

Ski Season

The ski season in La Tania runs from around the first week of December to the middle of April. In 2015/16 La Tania ski holidays ran from 5th December to 17th April. That applies across most of the 3 Valleys resorts, with Val Thorens and Orelle opening slightly earlier

Lift Passes

La Tania's gondola links it to the wider 3 Valleys lift system. Madame Vacances guests staying at the Chalets de La Tania are able to take advantage of an exclusive 5% discount on all lift passes apart from the family pass.

Lessons and Ski Schools

There are five ski schools in La Tania, including the largest in France, a branch of ESF. There is plenty of English-language instruction for everyone from small children upwards. Ski Progression, New Generation, Parallel Lines, Snoworks, and more are in the resort itself. There are reckoned to be about 1,500 instructors in the 3 Valleys ski area so you should find someone to suit whether you're starting out or want to polish up your off-piste skills.

Childcare and Family Facilities

La Tania is above all a family resort. As yet there isn't a baby nursery, but three-year-olds and older can enjoy an entertaining day at Chez Nounours House of Children. From the age of four, the little ones can start out on the white stuff at ESF, Club Piwi or Magic Ski School, who trumpet their staff-to-student ratio.

Parking and Access

There's not a huge amount of parking in La Tania and it's in high demand, particularly the underground carparks.

For safety's sake, park facing downhill with wheels towards the kerb, your car in gear and windscreen wipers lifted off the screen. Local police are said to be hot on stopping cars without snow tyres or snow chains so be warned.

Geneva (203km), Lyon, Chambéry (120km) and Grenoble airports or Moûtiers railway station are most people's easiest routes to La Tania. You can drive from Turin airport too, but at three-and-a-half hours away, it's a trek. Geneva is better served from the UK, but is busy and can be pricey.
